At VU, we believe sports play an important role in the overall purpose of an educational institution. We support a well-rounded intercollegiate sports program for both men and women and have a strong presence in the NJCAA where we can claim several national championships. But we are equally proud of our individual All-American and All-American Academic athletes who have used their talent to continue their education at four-year colleges.

VU Greats Mulder & McGill Drafted into NBA G League

Vincennes, IN – Vincennes University alums, and former Trailblazer greats Mychal Mulder, and Donte McGill were both drafted into the NBA G League this weekend. Mulder was taken with the 9th overall pick by the Chicago Bulls, and McGill was drafted with the 3rd pick of the 4th round, 81st overall, by the Orlando Magic.

As a 6-foot-4 sophomore at Vincennes University, Mychal Mulder averaged 15.7 points, 6.4 rebounds, and made 88-of-190 3-point attempts from the field (46.3 percent). Mulder helped lead Vincennes University to a 33-and-2 overall record, a perfect 30-and-0 regular season, earned NJCAA All-America honors, and was one of the best Junior College prospects in the country.

Mulder chose to sign with the University of Kentucky after completing his degree and eligibility at Vincennes, where his impeccable 3-point shooting continued. Mulder averaged 35 percent shooting from 3-point territory, and shot 92 percent from the free-throw stripe as a Senior at UK. He scored in double-figures 4 times while at Kentucky, and was 3rd on the team in 3-point field goals despite only playing 10.6 minutes per game.

Fellow former Trailblazer Donte McGill is also no stranger to success on the hardwood. McGill played a year at Goldey-Beacom College before transferring to Vincennes University. In his lone season with the Blazers, McGill averaged 11.6 points per game, shot 48.4 percent from the floor, shot 38 percent from 3-point range, scored in double-figures in 21-of-35 contests, and tallied over 20-points in 5 of those such performances.

McGill then signed with the Panthers of Florida International University, where his scoring talents were on full display. As a junior, he was one of the top scorers in Conference USA. McGill averaged 16.1 ppg, 4.6 rebounds, and shot 42 percent from behind the 3-point arc. As a senior, McGill was the 4th leading scorer in Conference USA with 18.3 an outing. He shot over 50 percent from the field on 7 different occasions, and led the conference with an outstanding 93 percent free-throw percentage. McGill racked up a career-high of 27-points against Elon, and against Florida Gulf Coast, was one free throw shy of the school record as he shot a perfect 12-of-12 from the charity stripe.

Coach Franklin said of the success of both players, “It was incredibly exciting to hear of both players being drafted. They both were very hard workers, and they both continued that work ethic at their next school. I believe it is not only a testament to Mychal and Donte, but also to how well we prepare athletes in our program. We wish them both continued success at the next level, and know they will do great.”
