Background History Review Policy

Vincennes University believes a safe environment is necessary for optimal learning, and it is the goal of the University to ensure all those admitted to the institution are committed to maintaining such an environment for themselves and their fellow members of the University community.

VU’s Admission Application inquires whether an applicant has ever been charged with a felony. All applicants who answer "yes" to this question must submit a completed Felony Application and Explanation Form including a personal statement addressing the criminal charge(s), and any other documentation the applicant believes supports their statement.

Applicants may also be notified by the Admissions Office that they will be required to submit the application fee necessary to complete a criminal background check; a background check provided by the applicant will not be sufficient. If an applicant who is admitted to Vincennes University is later discovered to have lied or not been completely truthful about their criminal history, they will be subject to immediate dismissal from the institution.

Once the required documentation has been submitted, each application will be reviewed. The Office of Admissions may then decide to approve the admission application, deny the application, or refer the application for further inquiry and review. Individuals may appeal denied applications with the Background Appeal Committee. All Background Appeal Committee decisions are final.

Please be advised that felony charges may prevent a student from entering a degree program or from obtaining work in that field upon graduation.  Even if a student's background check is cleared by the Admissions Office the student should have a conversation about the charges with his/her academic advisor, prior to beginning a degree program, to ensure the possibility of job placement after program completion.
