Track & Field Signs Trio of Talented Recruits to Outstanding 2017 Recruiting Class

Vincennes, IN – Over the weekend, Vincennes University Track & Field added All-State mid-distance stand-out Jacob Adams of Michigan City High School, 2x All-State Sprinter Jhala Henry of Jeffersonville High School, and 2x State-Qualifier in the discus Zach Cline of Forest Park High School.

Jacob Adams comes to Vincennes University as one of the state’s most heralded distance recruits in the 2017 class, as well as one of the state’s top middle-distance runners throughout the entire year. Adams holds personal bests of 4:21 (full mile), 16:31 for 5k on the grass, and 1:53.02 in the 800m run, an event that Adams has earned All-State honors in during both of the last two seasons. This season, Adams time of 1 minute and 53 seconds was the 3rd fastest time in the state of Indiana, and his 3rd place finish at the IHSAA State Track & Field finals was good enough to qualify him for the Midwest Meet of Champions.

Coach Gafner said of signing Adams, “We are excited to sign Jacob. He has tremendous upside, and has proven he races well on the big stage. I think he is going to be a very big contributor for us this upcoming season both on the track, as well as the grass.”

The 2nd signee of the weekend was 2x All-State Sprint/Jump stand-out, and former Jeffersonville Red Devil Jhala Henry. Henry was also one of the state’s most heralded athletes coming out of the 2017 recruiting class. Henry holds personal bests of 8.14 seconds in the 60 meter dash, 25.12 seconds in the 200m dash, 57.33 seconds in the 400, and she has jumped 17’10 ¼” in the long jump in just her first year competing in the event. This season Henry earned All-State honors in the 200m dash with a 9th place finish at the IHSAA State Track & Field Finals, and served as the anchor leg on a 4x100 meter relay team that finished 8th, also earning All-State Honors.

Gafner said after signing Henry, “I was really impressed with Jhala in terms of her performances and marks, but also in the unselfishness she displayed in the amount of events she would participate in each meet to try and help Jeffersonville to continue their strong team tradition. She will help us a lot in individual events, and I believe she will help several of our relays to qualify for nationals, and be very successful there.”

The 3rd stand-out athlete to become a Trailblazer over the weekend was former Forest Park Ranger Zach Cline. Cline holds personal bests of 166’8” in the discus, and 50’5 ½” in the shot put. Cline has qualified for the IHSAA Track & Field State Finals each of the last two seasons, and his mark this year in the discus was top-10 in the state for most of the year.

Coach Gafner said of signing Cline, “With Zach we not only get a great athlete, but also a very good student. He is an athletic thrower who I feel will not only do well in the discus, but also in the hammer. His athleticism will allow him to have an easier transition to throwing at the collegiate level.”
