Trailblazers Golf Finishes 5th at “Chilly” Rend Lake Invitational

Ina, IL – The Vincennes University golf team played through a 23-degree wind chill, snow flurries and light sleet to capture a 5th place finish at the Rend Lake Invitational on Sunday and Monday, (4/15-16).

Vincennes had a strong first day, sitting in fourth place, 5 shots out of second, and 13 shots behind the leader Kirkwood CC. Zach Hall set the pace for the Trailblazers with a first-round 75. Keegan McCullough finished with a 78, Zach Breault shot a 79. Jake English and Joe Allbright rounded out the VU strong first day with an 83 and 89 respectively.

“Monday’s round started with a wind chill at 23 and never really improved much for the entire round along with snow flurries and a little sleet,” VU coach Dennis Chattin. Breault and Allbright improved on their Sunday scores, but the remaining Trailblazers found the course conditions to be less than ideal. “It’s really tough to play when you have to have so many clothes on. It’s hard to swing freely, let alone keeping your hands warm so you can maintain the feel with the putter.” Coach Chattin added “We asked the players if they felt like we should withdraw after nine holes because of the conditions, but they overwhelmingly felt we should finish. This is the kind of thing that tests your mental and physical toughness, and while we shot 5 shots worse than Sunday, we really maintained it pretty well.”

Vincennes has dealt with terrible weather this spring season which caused the cancellation of a scheduled tournament last week. The Trailblazers are turning their focus to the Regional Tournament which will be on May 14 and 15th in Michigan.
