Vincennes, IN – The Vincennes University Volleyball team continued their historic start to the season by capturing two wins on day one of the Blazer Classic yesterday evening thanks to great all-around team efforts, great energy, and tremendous hustle.
In game one, the Lady Blazers drew the Vikings of Glen Oaks Community College. Unlike several of the previous matches this year, Glen Oaks came out swinging. The first set bounced back-and-forth until back-to-back big kills by sophomore Genesis Millisde and freshman Baylee Lippincott gave VUVB a stranglehold on both the score, and the momentum. Fellow sophomore Gabrielle Medrado would slam the door on the Vikes’ with a massive kill to end set one, and give the Blazers the set one victory, 25-20.
Glen Oaks again jumped out on VU in the 2nd, leaping to a 6-2 start. However, the Blazers would rattle off 11 straight points to force a Viking timeout. They never looked back. The Trailblazers cruised to the set 2 victory 25-to-13, and a set 3 victory 25-to-17 to claim a perfect 9-and-0 record, and a perfect 27-and-0 record in sets played this season.
Sophomore Gabrielle Medrado again narrowly missed her 10th triple double with: 11 kills, 16 set assists, and 9 digs. Sophomores Genesis Millisde, Cali Topolski, and Hannah Bullock added 11 kills, 17 set assists, and 21 digs respectively. Meanwhile, freshmen Mackenzie Haworth and Allison Ruddick added 2 aces, and 20 digs respectively.
The Trailblazers rode the momentum of their game one victory into their game two match-up with a very, very tough Wallace State Lions squad.
The Lady Blazers jumped out on the Lions early by a score of 5-3, but a mid-set rally put VU behind 11-to-7. Wallace State held a steady lead throughout the first despite a back and forth affair. After a well-placed tip, the Lions held a 21-to-18 lead. However, a couple of big serves by Mackenzie Haworth, and a kill by Genesis Millisde changed the tide of the set. Medrado, just as she had in the first game against Glen Oaks, shut the door on Wallace State in the first with a solid Kill between two Lion blockers. Set one went to VU by a score of 25-to-22.
Set 2 started much the same as set 1 as the two teams battled furiously back and forth until finally a couple of big kills by Sophomore Erica Kik allowed the Trailblazers to edge out in front. Vincennnes captured the second set 25-to-18, and had a 2-0 set lead going into set #3.
Set 3 was the most epic set of Volleyball played by either team this season. The Trailblazers scored the first point of set 3, but the Lions of Wallace State would rattle of 7 straight to wrestle back a solid lead. Wallace State would inch forward in the set holding onto a lead, until the Lady Blazers would ultimately walk them down, and tie the game at 19 with back-to-back kills by Gabrielle Medrado.
Both teams moved forward scoring points on the next 4 possessions, until VU stretched out to a 24-21 lead. But back came Wallace State, tying the game at 24. Genesis Millisde had a massive kill to allow the Trailblazers to pull ahead, but again, Wallace State countered to tie the game at 25. GG had another kill on the next possession, but again, the Lions fought back to tie the score at 26. This back and forth affair went on until finally the Lions mad an athletic play to tip the ball over the front row of Vincennes blockers, and took set 3, 30-32.
However, the Lady Blazers did not lose confidence. They settled their nerves, and closed out set #4 25-16.
In the stats column for the Trailblazers, Gabrielle Medrado racked up her 10th career triple-double in a Vincennes University uniform with 12 kills, 26 set assists, and 10 digs. Genesis Millisde & Erica Kik both enjoyed big nights above the net, as both notched double-digit kills with 12 & 10 respectively. Fellow sophomore Cali Topolski added 3 aces, Hannah Bullock recorded 22 digs, Abby Bigler had 13 digs, and Allison Ruddick notched 12 digs.
Coach Sien said after the match, “That was an epic set 3! This was the first time all year we played such a tight set. We had 5 match points, but were unable to seal the deal. Great rebound though by the ladies in getting an efficient set 4 win. The leadership of the team really was on display this evening. We easily could’ve folded after such a tough loss. Gabrielle Medrado had her 10th career triple-double, and the team really looks sharp heading into the 2nd day of competition tomorrow.
The victory moves the Trailblazers to a perfect 10-and-0 on the season, and 30-and-1 in set matches during their 2017 campaign! They will look to continue their unbeaten streak as they take to the VU PE Complex this afternoon at Noon against Malcolm X for the 2nd day of the Blazer Classic!
