At VU, we believe sports play an important role in the overall purpose of an educational institution. We support a well-rounded intercollegiate sports program for both men and women and have a strong presence in the NJCAA where we can claim several national championships. But we are equally proud of our individual All-American and All-American Academic athletes who have used their talent to continue their education at four-year colleges.

Vault Stand-Out Valdez Headed to West Georgia

Vincennes, IN – Vincennes University track and field stand-out Merica Valdez signed her national letter of intent to continue her academic and athletic career at the University of West Georgia Sunday evening at the Vincennes University PE Complex.

“Everything worked out so perfect, and there is no doubt in my mind that UWG is going to be a great program for me.” Said Valdez on signing her letter of intent.

Valdez currently ranks as the #1 pole vaulter in the NJCAA, and her PB of 12’1 ½” ties her for 3rd in Vincennes University school history. Being on the top-5 in the women’s pole vault at VU is no joke. The All-Time list also includes NJCAA National-Record holder Natalia Bartnovskaya, and NJCAA National Champions Kaitlyn Moricz and Aintzane Castarlenas Martinez. Valdez looks to be the next Trailblazer female pole vaulter to put her name next to these women for winning an NJCAA National Championship in the event.

“Merica is one of those athletes that never stops working. She is always trying to get better, and constantly working on her technique; which is exactly what a coach wants. She is a fierce competitor, and loves life. West Georgia is lucky to have her.”, said Interim Track & Field Coach Tim Marsee.

Valdez has already had a tremendous career in blue and gold. As a freshman, she earned All-American honors indoors in the pole vault with a 4th place finish. She was able to build on that performance with another All-American performance, and a 3rd place finish at the NJCAA Track & Field Outdoor National Championships.

Valdez added another All-American honor to her name with a 5th place finish at the NJCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Lubbock, Texas this year.

Valdez ended by reflecting upon her time at Vincennes, “I enjoyed my time here at Vincennes, and I’m beyond grateful for my coaches who have made an impact on my life, and helped me to get to where I am today.”
