VUVB Picks-Up Pair of Wins on Day-1 of Showdown on the Wabash Tournament

Vincennes,IN – The Vincennes University Volleyball team picked up a pair of wins over Region XII foes Mott Community College, and Kankakee Community College, both in straight sets, on the first day of the Showdown on the Wabash Tournament hosted by Vincennes University.

In game one, the Vincennes University Trailblazers faced-off against the Bears of Mott Community College. Sophomore Genesis Milisde had a well-positioned block to get the Blazers on the scoreboard to start the match. VU jumped out to a 7-1 run to start the set following the Milisde block, and would ride that momentum to a 25-16 set one victory.

However, the Bears would not be so easily thwarted. Mott jumped out to a 5-to-1 lead to start the 2nd before Vincennes rallied to tie the game at 7. The two teams would trade side-outs for several possessions before Vincennes finally broke-away to a 25-17 set 2 victory.

Sophomore Erica Kik rose up and hammered one home to start off set 3 for the Trailblazers. The teams would stay tight until Vincennes would finally pull away late to win the 3rd and final set, 25-to-22

Sophomore Gabrielle Medrado nearly racked up her 11th triple-double of the season by recording: 29 assists, 10 digs, and 7 kills. Medrado was joined by Genesis Milisde and Freshman Baylee Lippincott in the kills column. Both athletes racked up double-digit totals with 10 and 11 respectively. Fellow sophomores Hannah Bullock & Abby Bigler also joined Medrado in the double-digit digs column with 16 & 13. Freshman Brooke Lasher recorded 2 serving aces, while Kik and Lippincott recorded 3 blocks each.

Coach Sien said after the match, “Solid win over a solid team. Mott received votes in the DII poles this past week, and is usually pretty tough.”

In the 2nd game of the evening, the Trailblazers took on Coach Gary Sien’s former team, Kankakee Community College.

The Lady Blazers again picked up a win in straight sets: 25-16, 25-12, 25-15

Medrado again lead the team with 26 assists, and showed up in dig column with 9. Bullock & freshman Allison Ruddick joined Medrado in the dig column with 10 & 11 respectively. Genesis Milisde & Erica Kik recorded team-highs for the Blazers in kills with 6 & 8. Brooke Lasher, freshman Mackenzie Haworth, & Baylee Lippincott all recorded 3 serving aces each, while Lippincott and Kik recorded 3 blocks a-piece.

Coach Sien was happy with the team’s performance, and said, “We played a great game. We dominated serving, and blocking. Great game for our 20th win.”

The Trailblazers will return to action tomorrow for Day 2 of the Showdown on the Wabash Volleyball Tournament at Noon vs. Snead State, and 2 p.m. vs. Oakland!
