Women’s Basketball Slated to Play Tough 2017-18 Schedule

Vincennes, IN – Head Women’s Basketball Coach Harry Meeks released the Lady Trailblazers game schedule for the 2017-18 season earlier this morning, a schedule that includes games against 8-9 tentatively ranked teams within the NJCAA, a match-up with 2-time defending National Champions Gulf Coast State, and what is always a rigorous, competitive, district schedule.

The Lady Trailblazers will open the season at home against Lindsey Wilson as a tune-up before hosting the annual Sodexo Classic on November 4th & 5th at the Vincennes University P.E. Complex. The teams competing this year will be district opponent Lincoln Trail, NJCAA DII member Olive-Harvey, NAIA stand-out Indiana Tech, and VU. Last season the Lady Blazers cruised to wins over Olive-Harvey, and routed Indiana Tech on their way to winning the Sodexo Classic.

After 3 games at home, the Lady Trailblazers will go on a very, very tough road-trip. They will travel to Panama City, Florida on November 10th & 11th to play a pair of games at Gulf Coast State. In the first game on November 10th, the Lady Blazers will take on 2-time defending National Champions Gulf Coast State on their home floor. They will then return the following day to take-on projected top-10 ranked Tallahassee.

The Trailblazers will then head back to the Midwest where they will face-off with district rival, and defending district champion, Wabash Valley, on November 15th. The Lady Blazers will cap-off their road contest on November 18th & 19th at the Owens Classic where they are slated to play the projected top NJCAA DII team in Monroe Community College on day 1, and Region 4’s defending champion in Kennedy King on day 2.

When asked about the tough stretch Coach Meeks said, “I always like to play a tough schedule from top to bottom. I love to compete, and I love to give my girls the opportunity to rise to the occasion and show their skill set against the best that the NJCAA has to offer. If we want to be a team that can make a deep run at the National Tournament at the end of the year, we have to be battle tested, and we have to face teams that will be there.”

From there, Vincennes will return home for a short stretch of games as they pen district play with Kaskaskia at the VU P.E. Complex on November 21st before they take on NJCAA DI projected ranked Mineral Area on December 4th.

“Mineral Area is a good team. This will be an exciting game for our fans and our players on our home floor, and should be a good test before heading to Sedalia, Missouri later that week to take on a very good State Fair team.” Said Coach Meeks.

The Lady Blazers really get into the bulk of their district schedule following that following road contest at State Fair on December 6th, and are slated for another heavy-weight match-up with the Warriors of Wabash Valley on January 27th at the VU P.E. Complex.

VU will complete their regular season with a pair of road games before traveling to Rend Lake College in Ina, Illinois for the district tournament on March 5th-9th. Last season the Lady Blazers fell in the 1st round of the district tournament after a very injury plagued season, but Coach Meeks does not believe that will be the case this season.

“We return Ladellia Maggett, who was an NJCAA 2nd team All-American, and I believe will be one of the best point guards in the country this season. We return Clauida Stan, who at 6’6” and being much improved, I will believe will be a huge force for us inside. We also have several young ladies coming in this season who I believe will believe will make an immediate impact of us down the stretch.”

The Lady Blazers will hope to conclude their season at the NJCAA National Basketball Tournament hosted by Hutchinson Community College in Hutchinson, Kansas, March 19th-24th.

“We play a tough schedule from top-to-bottom this year. I believe it will be one of the hardest in the NJCAA. However, if we work hard in practice, and we foster an environment that is conducive to success, I believe we have a chance to be very successful, build off of the success we had last season, and make a run at Hutch this year.” Said Coach Meeks when asked about his outlook for this season.
