At VU, we believe sports play an important role in the overall purpose of an educational institution. We support a well-rounded intercollegiate sports program for both men and women and have a strong presence in the NJCAA where we can claim several national championships. But we are equally proud of our individual All-American and All-American Academic athletes who have used their talent to continue their education at four-year colleges.

Lady Blazers Impress in Volleyball Season Opener versus Lake Land

Vincennes, IN – In the first game of the 2017 NJCAA campaign for the Lady Blazers, the team downed Lake Land College in straight sets: 25-to-17, 25-to-10, 25-to-15, thanks impart to a big night above the net from Genesis Milisde.

The Lady Blazers jumped out on to an early lead on the Lakers of Lake Land College right from the gun, taking the first point of the match. A huge kill by “GG” Genesis Milisde gave the Trailblazers a 16-to-9, lead that they wouldn’t vanquish. The Lady Blazers throttled down, and took the first set 25-to-17.

The second set showed much of the same dominance by the Trailblazers as the first. VU would get up 3 points in the 2nd before the Lakers would scratch onto the scoreboard. A huge block by sophomore Erica Kik stopped a Lake Land run, and was just the spark plug the Lady Blazers needed to ignite on a 17-to-6 run to finish the 2nd set 25-to-10.

Set number 3, the Lakers came out scrapping. Athletes dove left and right, and managed to force a back and forth affair until sophomore Genesis Milisde, as she had done all evening, drove a kill hard into the middle of the Laker defense, breaking the tie. The Lady Blazers would then use 4 straight points on serves, including an ace, from sophomore Hannah Bullock before eventually coasting to a set win of 25-to-15, and match of 3-to-0.

“I felt we had a really good showing tonight.” Said Coach Sien after the game. “There is always more pressure to come out and perform on your home floor, and with the nerves of the first week of classes, the Trailblazer Tailgate, and the home opener, I felt that our girls did a great job. We were aggressive, and didn’t let them go on a lot of runs. Brooke and GG did a great job of being aggressive, and I felt Allison served very well.”

The Lady Blazers were led in Kills by Genesis Milisde with 7; although, freshman Brooke Lasher and sophomore Gabrielle Medrado also added 5 a-piece. Medrado also added a game-high 13 set assists. Sophomore Hannah Bullock and Freshman Allison Ruddick rounded out the stats column with 12 and 11 digs respectively.

The Vincennes University Volleyball team will return to action this Friday at Ancilla College. Game-time is set for 6 p.m. EST! Go Blazers!
