DECEMBER 2, 2015
Dr. Charles “Chuck” Johnson
22nd President of Vincennes University

With the appointment of Dr. Charles “Chuck” Johnson as the 22nd president of Vincennes University, the Board of Trustees has validated VU’s place as an integral part of Indiana’s educational and economic future. Johnson has served VU as Interim President of Indiana’s oldest higher education institution since August 1, following the retirement of long-serving President Dick Helton. The board unanimously voted the presidential appointment at its December 2 meeting.

A native of Washington, Indiana, Johnson came to VU in 2012 from Purdue University, West Lafayette, where he served more than 14 years overseeing internationally ranked MBA, Master’s, and executive education programs for the Krannert School of Management. While at Purdue he also served as a consultant to a start-up institution of higher education in Kuwait, the American University of the Middle East. He later served as a member of its Board of Advisors.

Prior to joining Purdue, Johnson worked in training and development and human resources for National City Bank in Toledo, Ohio (now PNC), and in a variety of student and academic affairs and instructional positions over 11 years at Bowling Green State University in Ohio.

Johnson graduated from Washington Catholic High School prior to earning his B.S. in economics from Indiana State University. He holds an MBA from Bowling Green State University and a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration from Purdue University, West Lafayette.

Johnson’s wife, Sarah Guerrettaz, a career educator for more than 25 years, has taught English at the high school, undergraduate, and graduate levels. She is a Vincennes native and VU alumna. They are the parents of two daughters.

AUGUST 1, 2015
Dr. Laurel Smith
Interim Provost and Vice President of Instructional Services/Dean of the Faculty

Smith has been a member of the VU faculty since 1985. In addition to her years of teaching and advising in the College of Humanities, she has served VU as Director of the Honors Program, Chair of the English Department, and Interim Assistant Provost for Curriculum and Instruction.

Working with educators across the state, Smith serves on the Statewide Leadership Committee for the Indiana Commission of Higher Education and as co-chair of the Core Transfer Library Sub-committee, also for ICHE. In October 2015, Smith will lead a VU team to the Complete College America conference at the invitation of CCA. Appointed by the Governor to the Region 11 Works Council in 2013, Smith continues to promote Career and Tech Education throughout this Region and the state of Indiana.

Throughout her career, Smith has welcomed opportunities to collaborate in and out of the classroom. With husband Steven, Laurel Smith actively participates in local and regional initiatives to support literacy, history, wellness, and the arts.

Smith's poetry has appeared in various small magazines, and she collaborated on the original script for Alice of Old Vincennes: A Musical (with Jay Kerr and Jim Spurrier). The musical made its world premiere at VU’s Red Skelton Performing Arts Center in May 2016 as part of Indiana’s bicentennial celebration.

Smith earned a Ph.D. in English from Ball State University (1991). She holds an MA (1985) from Ball State and a BA (1978) from Manchester College, now Manchester University.

Vice President, Workforce Development/Community Services

A native of Vincennes, Tucker has been practicing law in Indianapolis since 1989, most recently as a partner with Easter & Cavosie. While previously serving as general counsel for Collision Team of America, Indianapolis, his company maintained a close working relationship with the Area Nine Apprenticeship Program. Tucker also implemented a cooperative program with VU’s Automotive Collision Repair Department that provided VU students with work experience, the opportunity to earn college credit, and consideration for permanent employment upon graduation.

Tucker has been a regular presenter at legal seminars, including a statewide series of presentations for the Associated Builders and Contractors Association. He also serves on the boards of directors of two non-profit community groups in Indianapolis, one supporting park facilities and programs and the other providing life skills and job training programs for at-risk African-American men.

Tucker holds a law degree from Indiana University and a bachelor’s degree in political science from DePauw University. While attending college, he worked and traveled in Europe, teaching Urban Studies to American college students in the Netherlands, Great Britain, and the former Yugoslavia.
