Thank you for your interest in the Pharmacy Technology Program at Vincennes University. This program is available on the Vincennes campus and via Distance Education (online) and offers both a one year Certificate of Program Graduation and an two year A.S. Degree. 

The Certificate of Program Graduation is designed to provide students the basic skills and knowledge to begin work as a Pharmacy Technician. The A.S. Degree is designed to provide students the basic skills and knowledge to work as a Pharmacy Technician and assume entry-level management  responsibilities in a pharmacy. 

The course work for both the Certificate of Program Graduation and the A.S. Degree fulfill the Indiana training requirement for Pharmacy Technicians and prepare students to take the National Pharmacy Technology Exam. Vincennes University students do well on this examination and are sought by pharmacies throughout the state.

What is a Pharmacy Technician?

 Pharmacy technicians assist pharmacists dispense prescription medications to customers and/or health   care professionals. Pharmacy technicians work under the supervision of pharmacists who must review   prescriptions before they are given to patients. 

 Pharmacy technicians working in hospitals and other medical facilities prepare a greater variety of   medications, such as intravenous medications. They may make rounds in the hospital, giving medications to patients. Pharmacy technicians need the ability to be precise, have good communication skills, and be able to follow instructions competently. They spend many hours working on their feet and with their hands. 

Work settings typically include retail pharmacies and hospitals.

Duties may include:

Retail Pharmacy 

  • Stock and inventory medicine 
  • Maintain patient records 
  • Measure medications into containers 
  • Type prescription labels 
  • Prepare insurance forms 
  • Manage cash register

Hospital Pharmacy

  • Prepackage medications
  • Prepare sterile intravenous meds
  • Maintain nursing station meds
  • Collect quality improvement data
  • Deliver meds to patients

The Vincennes University Pharmacy Technology Program is accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.
